The spark by Black-Chimaera The spark by Black-Chimaera
Timelapse video can be found here: youtu.be/jobxPk4LXkQ

At some point, I wanted to draw Poe Dameron, and also wanted to draw a dragon. So Poe Dameron in a dragon rider AU anyone? With BB8 as magical being whose purpose isn't exactly clear but I wanted to include him. If you're really bored, yes, the writing on BB8 translate to something.

I hadn't drawn a dragon in something like ten years, so it was fun. I couldn't bring myself to make it completely lineless, as I really liked the sketch on some parts, so I kept it. I also drew the scales one by one if you're wondering, I hate myself that much. During the time I worked on this I had the time to watch in my second monitor to keep me motivated: the Croods, the Guardians of the galaxy Vol.2, Kiss kiss bang bang and Sherlock Holmes: A game of shadows. With some time left to spare. I haven't drawn much pictures with so much orange, not a color I usually work with. Which is a shame. Orange is a great color. My car is orange.

Character belongs to Disney/Lucasfilms
Time taken: 12h
Photoshop CC and Wacom Intuos

Hi!
I realize I commented on a piece by you before, however the style is completely different. Finn looked almost comic-like, this one is oriented towards a realistic take, and I will treat it as such.
First of all, the anatomy is mostly okay, with only two issues: His shoulders are quite small given that pauldrons were actually huge, plus at least 2 inches of gambeson underneath. As you can see this guy looks quite bulky although bodybuilding wasn't really a thing around 1530:
encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/ima…

The other thing is his right forearm is too short in comparison to the upper arm. They should be of equal length.

Not commenting on the realism of dragons ;)

I kinda like BB8 in this setting, who said you can't mix sci-fi and fantasy? The only isue I have is that he looks a little bit like he was floating above ground, because there is no shadow around him, and light bounces from the ground onto his bottom side, which would be impossible if he was actually standing in between all the rocks.
Then, the imperial flag also looks a little bit like it was floating, at least the part that Poe is stepping on, but this time it's because I can't really see what's underneath to keep it in this shape. I presume it's a rock, but I'd prefer if I could see it better.

Last but certainly not least, something seems to be a bit off with the perspective. Maybe it's a very small dragon, I don't know but from what I can see, it's standing behind Poe and his head is not turned towards the viewer, so I'd assume there's some distance between Poe and the dragon's head. Now, if this was the case, the leather straps he's holding would have to be thinner around the dragon's head than they are in his hand. However, the opposite is true. And that's what creates an impression of the image being cluttered, like they're standing on top of each other. At least for me.

All in all, I like your take on the new Star wars universe and the mixing of genres, and I appreciate your step towards a somewhat realistic drawing style :)

Thank you for your comment!

Finn was much less detailed than this as it was a commission, and the commissioner only paid for a sketch, basic shading picture. This is more of what I normally do.

I like BB8, but I still think something is amiss, but I can't figure out why I feel that way. He was also done at the very end because I had no clue what to do with him. So he was a bit rushed, sadly. Lightsources and shadows are still a work in progress for me. Challenge for the next picture is to not make everything so dark for once. Why do I always end up with dark color themes? Sunlight exists.

Amazing. The lighting and colours create such a nice atmosphere! Did the robot travel through time?

I tried to make BB8 a more magical artefact than a robot, though I'm not sure I succeeded. It was the hardest part to transfer into a medieval AU. It was easier to switch his spaceship into a dragon.

I have seen that you put the painting into the :iconprojectcomment: group so I'll try to give you a more detailed review,

first of all as I said the colours and all colours being orangy makes the painting full of atmosphere and creates a sense of danger or one has the feeling that something serious is going to happen.

You gave yourselves a hard task with the robot because I think it's hard to fit it in the painting. But I don't think its necessarily messes it up. I just think that the robot is too much in focus because the rest of the painting is quite dark. If the robot is not the main focus I would darken it up and/or put it more in the background.

The amount of detail is really nice and the expression if the medieval guy is on spot ;). I don't like the rocks so much though, especially in the foreground. Maybe it would help to put in a bit more highlights and shadows?

To give improve the composition and give the painting more impact I would suggest to draw from a diffrent angle so that the horizon is not in the middle vertically. You could for example 'capture' the scene as if the 'camera' is lower than the armed man...

Then I would not place the armed man in the middle of the painting

I hope I could help and all in all I must say a really admiresome piece

Thank you for your comment!

I really wanted to put BB8 (the robot) into the painting, but honestly he was just waiting to be done more of the time as I had no idea what to do. You can see in the timelapse video that he gets done pretty much at the end because I still wasn't sure how to do it. He still bothers me, though I can't put my finger on why.

The ''stiff'' composition with the guy in the middle was done on purpose. I wanted him more to pose than to be in an action scene. Though now I kind of want to draw him on the dragon. But I'm not sure I want to redraw the dragon so soon. The scales took over an hour and a half alone...

I watched your time-lapse. It's great :). Seriously I'm not good at positioning objects rightly. I'm trying to learn it at the moment. But a good composition is difficult and needs lots of practice I guess...

My drawing teacher in college kept telling us to do a ''good composition'' yet he never told us what a good composition was. So pretty much every drawing I do, the composition is trial and error. I'm trying a more dynamic thing for my current picture.

I'm currently trying to improve my compositions myself but what I learned so far is that they are a few 'rules'.. well there are more guidlines. They are also applied in Photography. Just google 'golden ratio' or 'rule of thirds'. That will help you place objects so that they have more impact.
But there are more things you can do to improve:
Another thing should chose one or too focal points. One thing is you can zoom out your drawing a lot and make sure your focal points are still visible or the painting looks still good in 'small'. Also playing with the perspective (frog or bird perspective) can make the painting more interesting...

There is surely a lot more to learn but you don't have to trial and error ;). There is a lot of theory behind and if you know it and apply it I'm sure you will feel safer in future on how to place objects in the painting ;)

I read about composition theory but honestly, it just doesn't click. Rule of thirds is probably the one I know the most, and the easiest one for me. Golden ratio, I know about it but never really tried it. I haven't been doing backgrounds for a long time, before that it was characters floating in white space, and composition didn't matter. Now it matters a lot more, but I still have a hard time figuring what to put as a background, and by the time I decide, the character is usually completed enough that I don't feel like redoing it if it doesn't fit in the composition. So I guess it all boils down to poor planning before starting on my part...

This provides a very nice look at how Star Wars would look if set in a fantasy/medieval type world. 10/10 amazing job on the detail as well! :D

Don't ask me how I even made the connection between Poe Dameron and a dragon in the first place, I don't even know!

Awesome job, and that is a particularly neat looking dragon considering you hadn't drawn one in so long. The good sized wing membranes and pectoral muscles really sell it!

Going back through my gallery, the last time I drew a dragon was in 2006, so 12 years ago. Poor thing had no muscles connecting the wings to the body and would never fly. You can see it here in the 2006 row: Improvement meme 2003-2017 by Black-Chimaera
